Like any other receiver devices used with satellite subscriptions, free to air or FTA receivers may also run into some problems. Most of these would those that affect its play-back capabilities that will keep you from watching the free to air channels on your TV. When these glitches happen, you need to troubleshoot your device to ascertain the exact reason behind it. If you won’t do anything about it, your FTA receiver won’t get any broadcasts at all.

Here are some of the basic troubleshooting steps you can do to know what is causing your problems with your FTA receiver:

1. It is possible that you just need to upload the .bin or location files of your receiver. Without these files, your receiver device will not be able to capture and give out any satellite programming.

Go to the website where you bought your receiver, as this where you can find and download the needed files. Save the downloaded information in a USB flash drive, which you should also plug into the receiver. Once this has been done, upload the new .bin files into your receiver so you will already be able update or change the satellite information within your FTA receiver.

2. Check the cables that run from your receiver to your television set and then on to your satellite dish. A loose cable anywhere between the receiver and TV or satellite dish is likely going to affect the video and audio signals being received by your TV.

Also check if the cables have been inserted into the proper ports. Remember that incorrect insertion of cables can also prevent you from viewing any free to air programming.

3. There are also times when your FTA receiver will just need to be reset. Turn off the power of your receiver device and disconnect all the cables that connect it to the power supply and all hardware like your TV and your satellite dish. This is how you conduct a hard reset of your receiver.

After several minutes, reconnect your receiver to your dish, your TV and the power supply. If there is nothing wrong with your FTA receiver, it will already be okay once it is turned back on.

4. Sometimes free to air programming can also be affected when something is blocking your satellite dish’s line of sight right into a satellite’s location. So, check for anything that might cause this kind of obstruction like branches, debris, leaves or even snow.

If there are any of these materials that get stuck on your dish, your receiver will not able to get any signals from the satellite it is being directed to. Removal of the obstruction can already fix the functions of your FTA receiver.
